There is a wonderful Peter Gabriel song “Shaking The Tree”. The lyric goes …..Don’t have to do what your mother has done, she has done, this is your life, this new life has begun…
When I first heard this song, a lightbulb turned on in my head. I had never thought about it in that way, and I started looking at all the patterns and behaviors I had that were actually not mine, but those of my mother…some good, and some…well, not so good.
Our mothers, I am sure most of them anyway, did the best they could with what they knew, and a lot of that knowing came from their mothers, and their knowing came from their mothers, and so on…The trauma and unhealed wounds through the generations adds up to how we feel about who we are, as women and as mothers, ourselves.
The "mother wound" refers to the emotional, psychological, and sometimes physical pain and unmet needs that stem from a complicated relationship with one's mother or mother figure. This wound can shape a person’s self-esteem, relationships, and sense of worth. Many of us may experience the mother wound as a set of inherited beliefs, patterns, or behaviors passed down through generations, influenced by cultural, societal, and sometimes traumatic factors.
In this circle, you will have an opportunity to share with other women, uncover what you may be holding as shame or guilt and release some of what you hold onto, that may or may not really be yours. You will be held in a non judgmental space while being seen and heard. There is great power in this alone, but we will also be doing ritual and guided imagery to help heal!
The mother wound, though challenging, offers an opportunity for deep self-growth and empowerment. Healing allows a person to rewrite their story, break cycles, and approach life and relationships with a renewed sense of freedom and confidence.
